Race at the Nationally Recognized Lehigh Gap Nature Center
Twenty years ago, the Lehigh Gap was a decimated moon scape that was designated a superfund site by the EPA after decades of zinc smelting from the New Jersey Zinc Factory. What started as a crazy idea turned into an unbelievable reality when the once superfund site was able to be revived into a beautiful nature preserve. They Lehigh Gap Nature Center was awarded the highest honor by the EPA for their work and if you come there now, you would not believe that there was not a tree on the mountain two decades ago.
The trail network winds along and up the mountain through a variety of ecosystems. The race begins on the 156 mile Delaware and Lehigh trail which takes you along the banks of the mighty Lehigh River before working through swamp land and up into the chestnut forests. You begin your journey back towards the nature center through a beautiful section of prairie grass and finish on the cliffs below the Devil's Pulpit.
Over the past ten years, the 10k has raised nearly $20,000 for the Lehigh Gap Nature Center and has showcased a hidden gem in our community. We are looking to expand the event and bring even more exposure to the LGNC by adding a 12 hour looped ultra of the 10k course this November!
